“A Natural” Dwight Smith
Written By: Robin Green
4 years of racing, 24 wins and 2 Renegade Point Championships is the reason that many call Dwight Smith a natural. He is still a new student in this sport but it seems he has surpassed his teachers. “I saw how much fun everyone else I was around was having and just decided to build a car of my own to join in,” he said Without really any sponsors, except the help of Michael Barbare, Timmy Smith and Milton Pitman from time to time, he does this all on his own.
The Renegade class has some stiff competition but so far he has won the Points in 2008 and 2009 at Travelers Rest Speedway. He has also won 2 out of the 3 races at TR already this 2010 season. He has now joined the many of us in Racers & Fans Anonymous. This sport will grab hold of you and for most, it is just that they enjoy it including Dwight.
Dwight Smith is married with 3 girls and works in Highway Construction. I asked him what he would say if one of his daughters wanted to take up the sport and he said, “I would support them 150% as they do me. I am not sure how I would handle it though. My nerves would be so bad I probably wouldn’t be able to run my own race. I don’t know how other parents do it, but I would do what ever it took to make it possible for them to give it their all.”
He has never really had any extreme accidents on the track, but he did hit the wall on the backstretch a few years ago head on. “I was sore but ok. It didn’t detour me from wanting to strap back in as soon as possible,” he said. Though he has great things to say about all the drivers in his class, one of his favorite competitors to race against in Renegade is Kyle Westmoreland. “That is one of the cleanest and nicest drivers you’ll ever meet,” said Dwight. He hopes to be moving up sometime this season or next into Stock 8 where he will get to run up against some of the most popular favorites at TR. Only time will tell what he has in store, but I predict many more victories in his future no matter what class he runs in.
Dwight Smith would like to Thank his entire family and the fans for their continued support as well as Michael Barbare, Timmy Smith and Milton Pittman for all their help.
I would like to Thank Mr. Smith for taking time out to talk with me. He is one of the tallest men I have seen and I had to really get back to get a picture. He shows Fantastic Sportsmanship on and off the track and was a pleasure to learn about. Good luck in 2010.
