THANKS TO BIG DOG FOR THESE PICTURES OF TRAVIS BLACKWELL
Written By: Robin Green
Local dirt track Crate driver Travis Blackwell from Greer, South Carolina started out his love of the sport helping his father #27 Danny Blackwell back in the 80’s. Travis strapped into a Limited Sportsman car at Riverside Speedway 10 years ago and never looked back. The only thing that has changed is the class and car number.
He originally choose to run his fathers #27 but it seemed to bring him nothing but bad luck so he came up with #999. It still conforms in it’s own way to keeping the #27 because 9+9+9=27. Travis said, “People always ask me how I came up with that number.” Now we all know that he is still running the 27 but just in a different way.
In 2008 Mr. Blackwell hit the wall head on coming out of turn 2 at Harris Speedway but he did not let that discourage him from getting back to it. “The competition has gotten tougher over the last several years and the young drivers coming on board are really bringing dirt track racing up to a whole new level,” said Travis.
At 39 years old, he holds 4 local Track Championships and more than 40 main event wins even after taking most of the 2007 season to marry the lovely Jaymee Blackwell.

I like to call him “No Drama Blackwell”. He keeps things running smooth for himself and drama free. Mr. Blackwell told me, “I want spin someone to get the win. I run the race to the best of my ability and as clean as possible. For me it goes back to the good old saying “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and I wouldn’t want someone taking me out like that.” He is a class act in the Fastrak Series and plans to continue calling TR Speedway his home this 2010 season. He will also be traveling to a few other local tracks running this Series when time and money will allow.
His Pit Crew consist of himself and his son Chastain Blackwell. Chastain is also a Young Guns driver who has had to take some time off this year due to a foot surgery. They both hope to have the young Blackwell back out there as soon as possible right along side of Travis in the pits.
So far this season Travis was torn up during the warm ups for the first race at TR. “It wasn’t anything but we all have to get used to the new track surface,” said Blackwell. He came back for the 2nd race and came in 3rd. Things are a little different at TR and for the better most drivers say. Blackwell is encouraging and never has a harsh word to say about anyone. “You brush yourself off and try it again,” I always say. Good luck to Mr. Travis Blackwell in the 2010 season.
Travis Blackwell would like to Thank his wife Jaymee Blackwell, son Chastain Blackwell, all his family, friends, fans and sponsors for their continued support.
