It starts with a love story beginning years ago. A woman working in the concession stands and a man just trying to get her attention. With a $250 4 cylinder car, Mr. Bill Morgan went out on the race track for the first time Thursday June 6th, 1967 to get the attention of a beautiful young woman named Janet who‘s father was also a race car driver on the local level. You can’t tell his story without the human side of local legend and future Hall of Fame Late Model Crate driver Mr. Bill “Spiderman” Morgan.
It all started 43 years ago with a young man just out of High School and I do mean he had just finished the day before he strapped into a race car for the first time. He said “I had to find a way to get Janet’s attention and this was the only thing I could think of to do. I would have never guessed that I would still be doing it today but it is an addiction like no other.” What ever he did that first night must have worked because he and Janet are still married to this day.
In 2009 Janet Morgan had the first of several Strokes and had to be hospitalized. “She’s my world, my everything. I was lost, terrified and didn’t know which way to turn. The fear of loosing my wife was overwhelming,” said Mr. Morgan. To see a grown man cry will soften the hardest of hearts. The pure love for his wife resonates through his voice like no other. He didn’t know if he would ever strap into a race car again until his wife told him “Just go for it and bring us home a win.” The very next day he did just that at Union County Speedway and then at Travelers Rest Speedway. As he stepped to the microphone in front of the huge crowd, all you could hear was the sob of a man happy to have won, yet so distraught over his loving wife not being able to be there to share it with him.
“You can look back and say I wish this, or I should have done that but everyone should know that it can all be over in the blink of an eye. Dwelling on what could’ve, should’ve or would’ve only prevents you from living each day anew,” said Morgan. Having been away from his family while in the Navy from 68 to 70, compared in no way to the possibility of being away from his wife for the rest of his life. Though Janet Morgan has not fully recovered, she attended Bill’s race at TR Speedway on March 20th, 2010. “ It is good to see her getting back out and enjoying life again,” said Bill.
Bill Morgan admits that racing has changed so much over the years. With the younger generation coming on board, the competition is getting stronger but with 1387 poll, heat and event wins or the 741 main event wins as of 3/19/2010, not to mention being a Late Model Hall of Fame nominee in 2009, at 61 years old in June the “Spiderman” Bill Morgan still has the dedication to win on a weekly basis just as he did during the start of his racing career 43 years ago.
Mr. Bill Morgan would like to Thank his Sponsors, family, fans and his Crew for their continued support.
