With the 2009 racing season ending for promoter Jody Palmer, drivers, fans, promoters, crews, etc have already started to prepare for the 2010 opening night show downs to come in each class under the promotional style of Andy Hyde. Though the promoters will change, auto racing will still remain full of life for years in the future at this local dirt track.
Travelers Rest Speedway has been my families home away from home on Saturday nights. This has been an experience that has opened my eyes to all of the potential thriving within the sport of dirt track racing right here in Upstate South Carolina. No longer is this a back yard sport, but a full industry among itself filled with potential beyond what was ever hoped could be.
It is not about one person here, but a family of people who gather for the enjoyment of one common interest. Win, loss or draw, they stick together. Each of these people will lend a hand, tools, parts or expertise to fellow participants of this sport on a daily basis. “When in need, they come running” said Nikki. Too often it is forgotten in the heat of battle on the dirt track as to whom did what for who, but quickly they remember when the call for help sounds again and sometimes the help shows up before the call even has a chance to be heard.
We hope to do so much more in 2010 to help this sport and our local track grow. Look for additional pages in the near future as well as the new documentary about the life of a few Young Guns drivers. Christina Worthy, Jason Calhoun and Greg Hall have already agreed to be apart of this ground breaking video series coming next season. Who knows who else may decide to come on board, so stay tuned for what is coming next.
